May 2014 Grand Knight Message

There is nothing like spring in Colorado.  Beautiful warm days, cool nights bring trails filled with runners, walkers and bikers outside to enjoy the scenery.   Spring also brings the Knights of Columbus Colorado State Convention. This year’s event was held in Keystone and this is the 3rd one that I have attended along with making one brief appearance at Supreme’s National Convention.

State Chaplain Fr. Brad Noonan started us off with a nice presentation that began with a quote from Pope John XXIII – “Don’t get pushed by your problems, Focus on your dreams”.

The weekend was filled with Resolutions of thanks to our clergy, state officers, Supreme, ladies auxiliaries, degree teams, the deceased and the like.  The Tootsie Roll Drive has a new name.  It is to be known as the “Campaign for People with Intellectual Disabilities”.

I was able to make two nominations at the convention.  The first one was to nominate our council to host the State Soccer Tournament.  The second nomination was much bigger.  I had the honor and privilege to Nominate Jon Herskovits to serve a second year as State Warden.  That was really cool.

During the report of our District Deputy to the convention,  he specifically mentioned the 3,000 pounds of food that our council organized and donated to the Denver Rescue Mission during 40 Cans for Lent.

Our council won 4 awards, Surge with Service, Shining Knight Award and this year we bounced up to the division with the largest councils in the state. And we still won 2ND PLACE.  Roger Giudici won an award for his work in the 4th Degree.  These awards are a statement on the wonderful work that all of you do for your church, family, community, youth, culture of life and council.

Thank you again for all that you do, Mother’s Day will be filled with Spaghetti, Roses for Mom’s and packages of lily seeds passed out to Moms on Mother’s Day. And A Rose for Motherhood is another new program we have.

Family of the Month

It is our pleasure to select Brennan Mendus, his wife Cindy and his daughters Emily 14 , Sarah 13, Enna 11 and Abigail 9 as our Family of the Month for March, 2014. Brennan, with the support of his family coordinated all of the activities for our two Lenten Fish Fries. He made sure we had the food, the cooks, the helpers, the servers and the clean-up crew. Brennan is also an instructor for Growing in Faith Together (GIFT) a program designed for lifelong faith formation.
Congratulations to Brennan and his family

Knight of the Month

It is our pleasure to select Gary Mayfield as our Knight of the Month for March 2014.  Gary is our Deputh Grand Knight and involves himself in every council activity, primarily as our chief cook. Specifically, Gary took most of the day away from work and his business to prepare the coleslaw, fish and fry the fish for our Lenten Fish Fries.  He not only did this during hte day but well into the evening as the Fish Fry event took place.  This is a prime example of Gary’s dedication and service to our council.

We are fortunaet to have men like Gary, who set an ideal example for others, of what the Knights are all about.

Congratulations Gary

Grand Knghts Message

A Message From Your Current Grand Knight
We all know that the Knights of Columbus is a Catholic Fraternal Service Organization, and since we get up every morning to serve God and to secure the wellbeing of our families, let’s start there – with

Service. YOU, meaning you and your families, have volunteered in excess of 12,000 hours in 2013. The significance of this number is not that we gave all of these hours to the Knights of Columbus or to the Parish directly, the significance is that most of you volunteered based upon your own interest. Something inspired you to drop what you are doing in order to give to those in need. Keep up the good work.
Secondly, Fraternal, defined as men. Is our Council only about the men? Not in my opinion and probably not yours either. Why? Because The Lady Knights are so important to us.!!! The Ladies charge our spirit and our commitment. Thank you Ladies for your special love, energy and support of your husbands. Your efforts, which may go unmentioned, NEVER go unnoticed. Your spirit flows within your husbands much further than you could possibly be aware of.
Our Fraternal year (July) started off with a great challenge – the loss of our dear Brother Josh. That was a setback but we continued on as he would wish us to do. Then came the challenge of frozen peach orchards in Palisades. But thanks to Gary, Joe and Tony, we reached our peach sales goal too. No challenge has stopped us from doing what we do as Knights at Pax Christi.
 The Tootsie Roll Drive raised thousands of dollars which we gave to those with intellectual disabilities
 Our college scholarship award will give thousands of dollars to a deserving high school student to help them pay for college.
 Our spaghetti dinners, family hikes, Sunday Donuts, Lenten Fish Fries, Beer ‘n Brats, Air Force football & Rockies baseball games and monthly pancake breakfasts offer our parishioners a safe place to gather with likeminded people. This work is important as supporting Catholic Values.

Our cash donations to the seminarians that we support, Nathan Hinds, Roy Recio and Justin Nelson remind us of the luxury that we have to freely attend Pax Christi whenever we so choose. Pray for these seminarians in their pursuit of the Priesthood.
 The Adopt-A-Family Thanksgiving Basket Drive was our most successful yet. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped made this a success/

Finally, as always, thank you to the Officers that we elected in July and for the Program Directors creativeness and drive to bring our programs to fruition. And thank you to our Trustees and past and present Financial Secretaries for your leadership.
And within the direction of Supreme, if you need insurance or annuities, please consider speaking with our new field agent, Lou Lesser.
And as always, JUST ASK.
May God Bless You,
Joe Musso
